Mill Business Booms
After successfully running a dairy farm then a seafood manufacturing business, New Zealand couple
Ian and Penny Aubrey have now turn their hands to sawmilling – and they’re loving it.
After spending several months looking around at what was available
they finally settled on the Rimu deluxe model mill.
Ian cites the Rimu mill’s main attributes as being very portable,
easy to set up, easy to use and very efficient.
"Portable mill’s are the ideal option for these smaller tree
blocks, which are not attractive to big companies or bigger mills."
The diesel motor also runs the hydraulic pump with the hydraulics
being accurate to within 0.5mm. "All in all, we’ve been extremely pleased," Ian said.

Tararua Miller a Very Satisfied Customer
The job just keeps getting easier for Eketahuna’s local milling contractor George Braddick. Three
years ago Braddick purchased a brand new Rimu engineering sawmill, which has not only made his job
easier but has increased production levels as well.
"It out performs the old swing saw as far as production is
concerned."
In three years, George has done 2500 hours on this machine. He says
that the new sawmill is very low maintenance.
The Rimu sawmill is also far more accurate than a swing saw as
there are no moving parts and Braddick can set the blades to the levels he wants and it will always
remain the same.
There is no need to go near the saw, it is mostly operated from a
gear stick. George says that with the old swing saw, you would be pushing and pulling all day.
George finds the Rimu Company to be very efficient with parts. He
said that a wheel had cut out on him recently so he notified Rimu, and a new one was sent within two
days.
"Rimu has done milling proud and cockies would say the same."

Local Forester Predicts Growth in Prices
The mill, a Rimu, which is made in Blenheim, is very accurate and it takes one person only 35
minutes to set up. It has given good service. Milling on-farm means timber is only a quarter of the
price of buying it.
The machine will process logs up to 2.2m in diameter and 7.5m long
and in fact Graham has put through those dimensions in macrocarpa and Douglas fir.
At the other end of the scale the machine will cut logs down to
100mm in diameter. The maximum board size it will cut is 150mm by 300mm.

Speed and Accuracy Characteristics of Mill
A computerised mill capable of accurately cutting to 10 cubic metres a day has been employed by Beach
Road Timber Mill in Wanganui.
Beach Road Timber Limited recently installed a sawmill from Rimu
Engineering in Blenheim and mill manager Ross Greenbank says the new mill offers flexibility and the
accuracy to produce the maximum possible timber yield from each log.
Greenbank’s new mill has a 32 kilowatt three phase motor with
hydraulic movements. The hydraulic movement eliminates the risk to the operator because the sawmill
doesn’t have to be physically moved along the log.
The new mill’s flexibility means it is easy to change from one type
and size of cut to another at a moments notice, so that cutting odd and non-standard sizes is a
breeze. |
