Times have changed!!

During a recent customer satisfaction survey we found our customers were happy to recommend us for any type of marine work and engineering work. They find our prices competitive and our services unique.

Our boat trailers have been going well and with good reason. We have general purpose trailers, boat trailers, specialized trailers for barges and yachts up to 3.5 tonne. The trailers are unique, long lasting and well made!

General engineering is keeping us busy too with local businesses using us for sheet metal fabrication of factory equipment.

Greg has offered a warranty and back up service on Rimu Portable Sawmills over the last 20 years which has helped him develop his problem solving skills, trouble shooting and is happy to have an old fashioned on the spot get in, get it fixed, get it done attitude!

Gregs skill and knowledge of products, equipment, marine installation, design and repair has been priceless for his clients, giving them the best, quickest and most economical solution.

Due to the recession people don’t seem to be buying big ticket items but they are modifying their existing boats. Our manufacturing is still going ahead in leaps and bounds – although there has been a shift as we head into summer. Our Sea Surge Pontoons are still extremely popular. The people at Rimu Engineering and Sea Surge Marine are changing with the times. They have successfully campaigned, targeted, up skilled and brought in lots of specialised Marine and General Engineering to cope in the current economy. A recent example is in the shift from Manufacturing of products to re-fitting, modifying, servicing and upgrading boats that individuals and local businesses have.

Ben from Dive Picton was “flabbergasted” at Gregs complete general knowledge of the particular boat he brought in. The Niaad boat Ben uses was one Greg actually built 15 years ago! An instant on the spot assessment was carried out and work was started immediately and the turnaround time was quick. Ben was over the moon with our forward thinking and practical problem solving which saved him money and meant he wasn’t without his boat for too long! He ended up with a much more comfortable boat which increased profits within his own business.

Other Marine work of interest is the refurbishment of several aluminium pontoon boats, upgrading them from cuddy style cabins with windscreens to factory looking hard tops, increasing the value of the boat for a fraction of the cost of purchasing new. Lionel Roughton from the Tasman Boating Club was thrilled when he picked his boat up. He was happy to see the streamline shape and aesthetically pleasing lines.

Tony Ching was initially reluctant to “let someone loose on his pride and joy” a factory Stabbie Craft. After seeing the results of his friend Lionels project, he had no hesitation in bringing it in straight away, a design was drafted and work began immediately. The results looked better than he imagined it would. Tony was so impressed with the ease of liaising with people who know their product and was happy with such things as the placement of seats, rod holders, sliding tinted windows. The compilation of all of those things ended up with us getting rave reports of our Marine Engineering expertise.

Over the years we at Rimu Engineering have had many happy customers, who have commented on our product service and reliability.

Endorsement for Rimu Contractor Deluxe Portable Sawmill

It performed extremely well and after only having the Mill for one week I had already cut 40 cubic metres.

Recently my Mill has been set up beside other Mills from different suppliers and was cutting 8" X 2" boards at a rate of a cubic metre (100 lineal metres) every half an hour. "It just blew them away."

On a good day I can cut 11 cubic metres, and this is allowing for the set up of the Mill. For small jobs I can set the Mill up in as little as half an hour.I would totally encourage anyone who is thinking of buying a Mill to buy one of these."

"I have found the Mill to be very productive and reliable - so much so that I have leased it out to other operators. I have also found it to be very low maintenance.

Every year I supply logs to the Rimu Sawmill site at Mystery Creek Fieldays. I have found Greg and Maurie Surgenor to be very honest and very reliable to deal with."

Endorsement for Rimu Contractor Deluxe Portable Sawmill

"After looking at different Mills in Australia and New Zealand we decided to purchase a RIMU because of it’s ease of set-up, portability and its ability to cut large and small sizes of timber accurately.

Being a quarter saw you are not limited to a 12" X “ cut and I have recently cut Larch beams 16" X 6" and 12" X 12" twelve metres long using track extensions. The RIMU is one of the few Portable Mills that can handle a six-foot diameter log and I have used this feature often.

We have always found Maurie and Greg straightforward and honest to deal with. Their after sales service has always been prompt. I was recently milling at Glentanner Station, Mount Cook and broke a micro switch on the Mill. A quick call to Greg saw a new switch arrive on the courier the next morning!"

Endorsement for Seasurge Boats

"I am so impressed with my 4.1m Seasurge  pontoon, powered by a 25 hp Johnson. I have the boat out in rough seas and was very amazed at how well it handles at very low planning speed and a very good V to the hull which is great for getting into the white wash. Cheers for a great little boat!"

Endorsement for Seasurge Boats

"I bought my  6.7m Seasurge Pontoon in 2006 from Rimu Enginering. It is powered by a 225 hp 4-stroke engine. I am pleased with the design, strength, workmanship and performance. It cuts through a large chop without pounding which makes for much more comfort on a long trip. It is very steady at rest and is a great work platform

We have had numerous accessories and modifications to the boat for our applications and Rimu Engineering has been very helpful and friendly to deal with"

"Saavid Fishing Ltd is the largest single harvester of Paua in Quota Managment Area 7. We recently made the decision to invest in another vessel specifically for working the East and West Coasts.

We chose a 5.6m extra wide Seasurge Pontoon boat. We worked closely with Greg Surgenor of Rimu Engineering throughout the building process and found him to be very open to our suggestions and requirements regarding our design needs.

Our Seasurge has exceeded our expectations in almost every aspect. It is by far the softest riding and driest pontoon we have travelled in. We have found her to have an excellent weight carrying ability."

Endorsement for Yang Dong Marinised Diesel Engine

"My 30ft fibreglass boat needed a new engine so I opted to replace it with a new Yangdong Chinese Diesel Engine and gearbox. This worked out to be incredibly cheap compared to rebuilding my old engine. It pushes my boat Stargazer along at displacement speed 8 knots, at very low rpm. This proves to be very economical.

The Engine arrived exactly as Greg from Rimu Engineering described and has been easy to install and very reliable."
